Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a framework that helps people with challenging behaviours lead better lives by understanding and addressing their needs. PBS is important to individuals, teachers, healthcare staff, and parents because it:

  • Helps people communicate: PBS helps people learn new ways to communicate their needs.

  • Improves quality of life: PBS helps people lead meaningful lives without unnecessary restrictions

  • Involves the person and their family: PBS is based on the values of inclusion, choice, and participation. The person and their family are involved in the assessment process and in co-producing and implementing the plan.

  • Uses evidence: PBS uses behavioural science and evidence to inform decision-making.

  • Is proactive: PBS focuses on getting the environment right for the person, rather than just responding to challenging behaviour.

  • Doesn't use force: PBS doesn't punish people for displaying challenging behaviour.
